Acne and pregnancy

Pregnancy is a very particular time in a woman's life. While the unborn baby is developing, the pregnant woman sometimes suffers from minor ailments such as pregnancy acne.

What is pregnancy acne?

It is a form of acne that appears during pregnancy. Blackheads, whiteheads and red spots develop on the face, back, torso and chest.

When does pregnancy acne occur?

In all cases, it is common to experience early pregnancy acne. This is the time when the hormonal balance is most disturbed. Acne tends to subside during pregnancy. After childbirth, pregnancy acne gradually disappears, sometimes over several weeks or months.

What causes pregnancy acne?

During pregnancy, hormonal changes are the main cause of acne spots. Specifically, the excess of hormones leads to hyperactivity of the sebaceous glands and thus to hyperproduction of sebum. Sebum clogs the pores of the skin and causes spots.

Who is affected by pregnancy acne?

This form of acne can affect any pregnant woman, those who have had acne at a younger age, those who have never had it and those who have experienced a first pregnancy with or without acne. The baby born from an "acne-prone" pregnancy may have acne at birth or during adolescence, or they may never have acne at all.

Having pregnancy acne can be a bad experience for expectant mothers; they don't want spots to spoil this very special time in their lives!

How should acne in pregnant women be treated?

The treatment of pregnancy acne should not be based on products that are toxic to the baby. During pregnancy, for example, cosmetics based on essential oils and those containing vitamin A derivatives such as retinol should be avoided.

Wash and hydrate the skin with products suitable for acne-prone skin. Choose non-comedogenic cosmetics and makeup. Protect yourself from the sun as it is a well-known "false friend" of acne-prone skin. In the event of acne after pregnancy, keep up these good habits!

In the case of more severe pregnancy acne, see a GP or dermatologist to find a treatment adapted to the needs of the skin and compatible with pregnancy.
