Acne in women, a pathology in its own right

Acne isn’t just for teens. It can often persist into adulthood, and increasingly so in recent decades.

THE CHARACTERISTICS OF ACNE IN WOMEN

Women’s acne has been clearly identified. Unlike adolescent acne (3), it is a clinical form in its own right.
  • mild to moderate acne (severe acne is rarer)
  • primarily inflammatory (red pimples)
  • located in the U zone of the face, i.e. the bottom of the face (chin, jaw region, sub-maxillar region: neck)
  • pigmented spots and scarring
THERE ARE MANY LONG-TERM RISK FACTORS
  • Family history (heredity, etc.)
  • Hormonal disruptions (period, pregnancy)
  • Stress (work, etc.)
  • Hyperseborrhea
  • Lifestyle (poor eating habits, smoking, alcohol, unsuitable cosmetics)

AN UNDENIABLE PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACT

Not all of the consequences of women’s acne are visible. This form of acne and its scarring have a major impact both psychological and on the patient’s quality of life. These women may be very upset by a pathology they believed was limited to adolescence and that they have difficulty living with on a daily basis.
One epidemiological study reports that 75% of affected women are embarrassed or frustrated by their acne. There is also a significant link between acne and certain symptoms of depression and anxiety (5).

TREATMENTS DO EXIST

Although women’s acne can sometimes be difficult to treat, there are solutions. Treatments must be suited to this population whose skin is sometimes more sensitive than adolescents’ skin.
European health authorities recommend specific treatments for women’s acne adapted to the severity and presence of residual marks.

The therapeutic strategy is often based on a combination of several treatments:
  • drug therapies (oral or topical), primarily using retinoids and azelaic acid
  • peelings and certain laser treatments can be very useful
  • specific cosmetics, for use alone or in combination with drug therapies, to improve tolerance and effectiveness
  • suitable makeup (non-acnegenic) to improve the skin’s appearance and the patients’ quality of life

To change the daily lives of these women with acne-prone skin, Laboratoires Ducray created Keracnyl Sérum, a daily care product that combines innovative active and dermatological ingredients with a triple action: anti-blemish, anti-scarring, anti-age.
