Porous hair: how to identify and control it

Hair porosity is a very common problem, but it is difficult to manage on a daily basis. It can even cause premature aging of the hair. Here's an overview.

What does porous hair look like?

A porous hair is a hair with open scales. Result: moisture and water enter more easily, but the hair has a hard time retaining it. And the same goes for everything you apply to your hair, namely serums, masks and other hair products. This is why you might get the impression that your hair products aren't effective. In reality, hair porosity is what prevents the hair fiber from retaining moisturizing active ingredients and making full use of them. And this causes a vicious circle...because porous hair is especially fragile when exposed to daily aggressions.

You should note that hair porosity essentially depends on hair type. For example, curly and coily hair tend to be naturally more porous than other hair types. But it can also be accentuated by a weakening of the hair fiber. In fact, this is one of the symptoms of hair that is aging. If you have porous hair, you must have already noticed: repeated coloring and sun exposure are not kind to your hair!

A few tips to fight against hair porosity daily

Controlling your porous hair daily is not an easy task! It is more difficult to style and keep healthy.

There are a few steps you can add to your hair care routine to help the scales to close, and thus reduce hair porosity:

Take the time to dry your hair properly

  • The first tip is to invest in a microfiber towel. It will do a better job of drying the lengths of your hair.
  • Then you can finish drying using the "cool" setting on your hair dryer. An essential reflex to limit aggression. Because as we mentioned, it's a vicious circle: the more damaged and dry the hair is, the more porous it becomes!

Protect and hydrate your hair

Finally, the other key step in fighting against porous hair: protect and hydrate it by using the right products, rich in antioxidants, as well as heat-protective products if you absolutely must use a hair straightener.  Without using these essential products on a daily basis, it's impossible to fight against hair porosity.
