"Psoriasis is a genetically-determined disease.
For the disease to be triggered, the psoriasis genes must be activated. Once this activation takes place, the disease will develop, alternating between periods of flare-up and remission. That is what we call the natural history of chronic inflammatory diseases. This is also why patients are often disappointed when new plaques appear. They think that this is because the treatment did not work. However this is not the case, the treatments currently available for psoriasis do not cure the disease, the best they can do is to relieve all its symptoms. Once the symptoms have subsided, if the skin is re-exposed to other trigger factors (infections, micro-traumas, drugs, stress, etc.), the symptoms will reappear."
