What does it mean to have dehydrated skin?

Dehydrated skin can affect any skin type, as it simply means your skin lacks water.
The water found in the epidermal cells evaporates, and skin becomes dehydrated.

This is a real concern given that the skin’s epidermis, a genuine reservoir, contains 30% of the body’s water reserves. Unlike dry skin, dehydrated skin is a temporary condition.

The causes:

Cold temperatures, wind, fatigue, heating and air conditioning, an overheated room, overly hard water, etc.

All of these factors alter the flow of water between the dermis and the skin’s surface. This is what experts refer to as Transepidermal Water Loss.

The consequences: dull skin tone, uncomfortable skin, appearance of dehydration wrinkles or even a lack of suppleness and elasticity.
However, this condition may be difficult to see, as there are no real visible signs such as flaking, for example. The good news is that skin dehydration will eventually pass if you adopt a good skin care routine.

How can you tell if you have dry skin?

Dry skin is a skin type, just like combination or oily skin. Dry skin differs in that it produces less sebum and is thus naturally lacking in lipids.

These epidermal lipids (ceramides, fatty acids and cholesterol) are essential components of the skin’s “cement” which helps maintain the epidermis and a protective skin barrier.
Due to this lipid deficiency, the epidermis is unable to maintain the skin’s natural hydration and moisture. Ultimately, the skin barrier becomes damaged.

What is the solution to dehydrated skin?

Generally speaking, external elements are to blame for skin dehydration.

Pollution, smoking, heating and air conditioning, stress, trouble sleeping, the wind, cold temperatures... Even the heat in summer is a factor.

The solution? To begin with, you should drink more water to help restore the body’s reserves.

Cosmetic products are also your best friends. A basic hydrating cream may not cut it.
You will need a comprehensive skin care routine with products that replenish and maintain the water reserves in your epidermis.
