PSORIASIS : an innovative active ingredient, the Celastrol

When developing our products at Ducray Dermatological Laboratories, we draw on the wealth of knowledge and experience of dermatologists who are experts in specific diseases, in order to design products based on the latest medical progress.

For our range for psoriasis-prone skin, Prof. Jean-François Nicolas guided us in creating products that incorporate the latest medical progress in the field of psoriasis. He explained to us, among other things, the importance of acting on IL17s (Interleukins 17), which play a key role in psoriasis.

Our internal R&D teams discovered Celastrol, which acts on IL17s in particular.

Celastrol is derived from a plant, trypterigium wilfordii, native to South-East Asia.

The concentration of the active ingredient in the roots of this plant is very low, meaning the traditional extraction process was not viable. Obtaining 1kg of Celastrol would have required cutting more than 5 tons of the trypterigium wilfordii plant , equivalent to 10 tennis courts. The process would have been destructive, non-ecological and unsustainable and therefore would not have been in line with the values of the Ducray brand.

To resolve this issue, the Pierre Fabre biotechnology teams were highly innovative and developed a plant cell culture process which takes a small piece of the plant’s leaf and multiplies the yield of our active ingredient, Celastrol, by 100. This means the process takes less time, uses less water, less energy, less solvent, and above all no insecticide, while preserving the plant.
