What is hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is a chronic skin condition that affects more than 1 in 3 women worldwide. It results from increased activity of melanin, the biological molecule responsible for skin pigmentation, which leads to the formation of dark spots on the skin's surface. Sun exposure is the main cause of hyperpigmentation, along with other factors specific to each individual. This phenomenon is exacerbated in people experiencing hormonal changes, such as pregnant women or those taking hormonal contraceptives. This is referred to as melasma, or pregnancy mask.
