Why is skin prone to spots during the menstrual cycle?

You have no doubt noticed that, just before or during your period, your skin tends to be more sensitive, and spots may be more likely to appear. The menstrual cycle actually has an impact on the condition of your skin.

Hormone levels vary throughout your menstrual cycle. This yo-yo effect can influence your mood as well as your skin, which becomes more sensitive during your period. Spots may appear as a result.

What causes spots to appear during your period?

Hormone levels are at their lowest during menstruation. As a result, your skin is more sensitive than usual and thus more vulnerable to irritations. The skin barrier becomes fragile and less resistant to external aggressions. At the same time, the sebaceous glands are on high alert, and sebum production goes into hyper mode. The result: skin is oilier, creating the perfect environment for blackheads and blemishes to flourish. At this point in your cycle, you should therefore limit, as much as possible, your exposure to any aggressions: hair removal, exfoliation, overly harsh face masks, etc. Even very hot water should be used sparingly.

To cleanse your skin, opt for gentle, slightly astringent products with less aggressive formulas. A gentle approach to skin hydration is required. Dermatologists recommend hydrating skin care enriched with purifying active ingredients (such as zinc), and specific textures, designed for acne-prone skin.

If spots still appear despite these efforts, be careful not to touch them (and certainly avoid popping them), as this can increase inflammation and make spots even more noticeable and painful. Rather, to avoid inflammation, cleanse your face using a hydrating micellar water, and purify your skin with a gentle cleanser. Above all, during your period, when hormone levels are at their lowest and skin is usually drier and more sensitive, hydrate in the morning and evening with a product that boosts lipid synthesis in the intercellular cement.

How to care for your skin after your period

Although your period is over, your skin will take time to get back to normal. It won’t be until the middle of your cycle, when estrogen levels return to normal, that your skin’s natural suppleness and softness will be restored. In the meantime, you must continue to care for your skin using products developed specifically for dry skin to guarantee hydration and to fight against dryness.
