Which detergent should eczema patients use?
Detergent is often blamed for eczema flare-ups. So, to soothe eczema flare-ups some people change brands once, twice, even three times...but they still have eczema! We must remember that eczema is of multifactorial origin. In fact, detergent is rarely the cause of eczema. However, it can be interesting to bear in mind and apply a few simple rules about detergent and laundry.
Which detergent to use?
Use the best detergent to favour confort when wearing your clothes
- Use a regular liquid detergent, the same for the entire family. Opt for one without fragrances or allergenic substances such as essential oils or certain preservatives (e.g.: methylisothiazolinone, methylchloroisothiazolinone); some detergents are labelled "hypoallergenic" but this does not guarantee no allergic reaction! You can also use soapberries or Marseille soap which are eco-friendly and pocket-friendly options.
- Limit use of softeners
How much detergent should be used?
- It is pointless to use large quantities of detergent. This does not get better wash results and some detergent might remain in your clothes! Also, for best rinse results, do not overload the machine.
- When possible, program a double rinse cycle to eliminate any detergent residue.
Other tips and tricks
Here are some tips that you can use to soothe eczema flare-ups in your everyday life.
- Limit hand-washing clothes, since rinsing might be less effective than in a machine.
- Avoid hanging clothes outside to dry on windy days or during pollen season. This prevents clothes from being "dirtied" by allergens.
- Opt for natural and soft materials: cotton, linen, silk, fleece and terry cloth.
- Avoid wearing wool clothing or accessories in direct contact with the skin. Try wearing a cotton T-shirt underneath.
- Before wearing new clothes, wash them once and cut off the tags.
